Board & Card Games Stack Exchange is a question and answer site for people who like playing board games, designing board games or modifying the rules of existing board games. It's 100% free, no registration required.

In a free market version, there is no robber and sevens don't do anything (either reroll or nothing pays out). Optionally, players' resources cards are public information.

If so, what was your experience?

Sounds inferior to me - part of the fun of Settlers is the pressure to find a way to build something every turn, rather than run the risk of losing 4+ resources on an unlucky roll. Where is the incentive to make "bad" trades if you can afford to just wait until your hand gets better? Goodbye tension, goodbye hard decisions... – thesunneversets Aug 16 '11 at 0:44
Hmm, would you say the same for real life? – Noel Aug 16 '11 at 1:27
@Noel - welcome to the site; unfortunately, this question isn't a good fit for the format – LittleBobbyTables Aug 16 '11 at 1:34

Noel, have you tried this? And if so, how did it work out? Any issues? – Pat Ludwig Aug 16 '11 at 3:35
@PatLudwig I have tried this, multiple times actually. I found it is a good introduction for 2 or more players who are new to board games (not just new to catan, and if its only 1 we let them sink or swim) and it works well people who do not enjoy the pressure/tension cough all the wives and girlfriends of my board gaming group cough For me, I enjoy the increased tension and strategy required by playing the raw game. Although, we have found this considerably speeds up the game. – MaskedPlant Nov 22 '11 at 16:13
