I agree. Getting an early victory point card is nice, but I usually want something else then.

Yes. I only focus on development cards early on cause they can only take you so far. If you focus on development cards to early, your going to be fall behind the other players and they'll get more resources then you in the late game. I'll buy a few in the early part of the game, but in the beginning more land is what I'm after.
