I code for coffee. They give me the coffee, and I make the code.

comment Public knowledge in Settlers of Catan?
So you've not played Settlers of Catan, until you've played it in the original German then? Sorry! I know it's a bad pun. It sounds like they corrected they English translation to be more accurate to the original German rules.

comment What are common contracts in Catan?
@Powerlord - Players are allowed to build in a "special building phase" when playing 5-6 players after the player who just went. Players may only use the resources they have on hand, and may not trade with each other, or the bank.

Your the first person I've heard to adopt this set of rules, but I've only played Catan with my friends. We stick to the original rules.

comment When is it a good time to offer a draw in chess, and when should I accept one?
The comment, "but at some point your wife is going to start making loud yawning noises", is priceless. +1

Yes casual play. If you're a ranked player, I assume that would change when your willing to draw and when your not willing to draw.

comment Games that are quick to teach to new people, yet still fun and strategical
I love settlers, but I've had friends balk at playing it since it looks complex to them. It's not a quick game to teach people.

comment With both Seafarers and Cities & Knights expansions, how many victory points should I play to?
I've noticed the omission from the rules books, hence why I asked the question. Even with my limited play of Cities & Knights, I've noticed it does slow the game down. I can see why people prefer not to combine the expansion because of the game length issue. I'm willing to try it, but I will make sure this is a large mass, ever on random maps.

comment How important is memorizing chess openings in casual play?
I'm quite familiar with a variation of scholar's mate that we used to used to try on each other in middle and high school to see if you were paying attention.

comment Catan: when to buy development cards?
No no no, I meant your play style, not your friends. Your more focused on building up then building out earlier then me I am it seems. Since I focus on building out and then up, I think it would be a good game. Your friend's play style is likely to cause the other players to gang up against him, and I see games becoming, "As long as he doesn't win, we've all won!"

comment Catan: when to buy development cards?
Since my last comment is rather long, I'll also say that cap of 4 cities does make my analysis a little off. If I have 3 cities now, I can only build one more. Assuming if I build only 1 city and two more settlements, you would need only 17 resource cards, and three more total locations to get to 10 points.

comment Catan: when to buy development cards?
You hit the nail on the head that you need a third settlement location. With 3 cities and largest army, your counting on drawing two victory points. With 5 development cards out of 25, your looking at having to buy an average of 10 development cards in order to pull those two victory points. (Fate would have to be against you not to have largest army at this point) Your turning ~30 resources into 4 victory points. Two build two more settlements and turn them into cities, is only 18 resources. Your resource diversity needed is less but the number of resources needed is more.

I agree. Getting an early victory point card is nice, but I usually want something else then.

comment Catan: when to buy development cards?
Yes. I only focus on development cards early on cause they can only take you so far. If you focus on development cards to early, your going to be fall behind the other players and they'll get more resources then you in the late game. I'll buy a few in the early part of the game, but in the beginning more land is what I'm after.

I've noticed that myself.

comment How do you place your initial settlements in Settlers of Catan?
@Powertieke I like Seafarers but I'm a big fan of the map diversity.

comment Why would you want to play with a deck bigger than 60 cards in MTG?
@Egg of P'an Ku For any serious deck, 60 cards is the way to go.
