I'm a fifth year graduate student in physics at Penn State University, doing research in high-energy particle phenomenology. I also have a hobby interest in computer programming.

Is the target for an ability part of the cost? Aura spells have targets just like instants and sorceries (may) have targets. Once the Aura spell resolves, then it creates an Aura permanent, which does not have a target but instead is "attached" to the thing it enchants. |

What's the current state of Magic: The Gathering online play? It's my understanding that only the very best pro players (like, top ~20 in the world) have good enough win percentages that they can sustain their MTGO activities solely through winnings and selling drafted cards. For the vast majority of us, it requires some input of money to keep going, although the better a player you are, the less your average cost is. |

How should I determine how many lands of each different color to put in my deck? It's not exactly simple, but this is about as close to a magic formula (pun intended) as I've ever seen: channelfireball.com/articles/… (and for Modern: channelfireball.com/articles/…). |

How to decide if I should use a counterspell in MTG? +1, but even True Conviction can be a dud if your opponent has no creatures. I think it's worth emphasizing that you can't say "always counter [card]" or "never counter [card];" you always have to consider the game state. |

Can I cast a spell after a certain part of the stack is resolved in MTG? @Izkata: the stack worked this way before 6th edition came out. Or rather, there was no stack before 6th edition, but there was something called a "batch" which worked more or less like you're describing. However, batches have not existed in MTG rules at all since the 6th edition rules change in 1998. |

Which damage number does lifelink use to determine the life gain? It's not really a question of which damage number is used to determine life gain, because there is only one damage number. As the answers explain, in your example, a 3/3 creature deals 3 damage, period. The toughness of the blocker, 2, is not an amount of damage. |

How does the double strike mechanic interact with other mechanics like lifelink or trample? @Beofett: no, it does not. |

Does Harmonic Sliver have to destroy a permanent? @Stuart: good point, you're right. (I was confused by the timing rules in MTGO, in which abilities are never actually placed on the stack until a legal target is chosen) |

Can you claim a Double Sacrifice Bonus? To offer a slightly different way to think about it: an ability that says "Sacrifice [X]: Do [Y]" does not mean that "[Y]" automatically happens whenever you sacrifice [X]. And in general, it's not the case that the effect of an ability occurs whenever you happen to take the action specified in the cost. You have to specifically choose to use a particular ability in order to get its effect, as Ian said. |
