comment How much would it cost to get started with Magic: The Gathering?
Aw, don't worry about that; the first one's always free!

comment In bridge, should a responder devalue her hand if short in opener's suit?
Well, there's the flaw in understanding right there. 34 is certainly enough for a small slam; in NT or with a trump fit. You weren't in NT, and you didn't have an 8-card trump suit. The primary concern is finding the fit, and going straight to 4NT takes away all the room you should be using to do so. Applicable bridge rule: "When there's no fit, QUIT."

comment How well do sleeves protect against spilled drinks?
You don't have to print them at high quality, you can even reduce to greyscale if you want. I had a friend print out a Magic deck several years before photo printing was common, and while it did use up about a third of his ink cartridge I'd say it was comparable in cost with buying several packs of deck protectors. If you aren't in the habit of completely rebuilding your deck every month you might not have to print more than one card a month after the initial print run. So it can be a one-time cost.

comment Should I respond to 1 NT in a suit or NT holding 17 HCP and a void?
Absolutely. Only after you know the point count is it important to figure out how many losers you can't avoid on the lead.

comment Where did the “can't build next to the robber” house rule come from?
This would be my guess as well. The reason for this "added power" likely being that the robber blocks production and there's no production on water. Since the pirate doesn't block production, a different ability is called for; hence the sea hex control. Apparently there's no fishing on Catan. Or there is, and it just doesn't produce much besides drunk fishermen.

comment Is Ace high? Or low? Or both?
Definitely, Ace is always 1 and never 11, never considered it being worth 11. Allowing it to be part of a run with Q K A seems to put a couple more points into the game, that's an effect I've seen. It shows up significantly in a Q K A 4 hand being worth 7 points instead of just 4 points. Slightly higher average point values in hands.

comment Is Ace high? Or low? Or both?
Yeah, if Ace was both high and low then it would be a 5 card straight, with K A 2 being a valid 3 card straight. If Ace was high or low (but not both) then K A 2 is not a valid straight but Q K A is one straight and A 2 3 is another. If you follow me.
