Does this mean that you could add two words, as long as all tiles you place are in the same column (possibly with space between them)?

comment How can I play games with closed information with players who cheat?
@tttppp We actually allow that. If the challenge is "too many cards", then the previous player checks the 5th card to see if it's correct. Of course, this still requires some degree of honesty. When we play cheat, we allow players to cheat however they wish except lying when challenged. For us, it works very well - and we'd just stop playing with someone who lied when challenged.

The purpose of draw-two isn't necessarily to speed up the game time, it's to speed up the time between any player actions (to prevent players getting bored with the constant passing)- if players pick more cards each turn, they are be more likely to be able to cast a spell, or will be able to participate in (or start) transactions more often. However, even draw-two still has long pauses.

Are you sure that the rules haven't changed much from the original? The comments on this answer suggest that the trading rules used to be different (presumably pre 3rd ed).

comment What is optimal end play in Settlers?
I agree. I would also add that it's good to be able to win without needing to expand into contested territory - for example, plan to complete the longest road by an internal connection that others can't build in to. Or plan to build a settlement at the end of a road that isn't (or better - can't be) contested. Or convert villages to cities, or play soldier cards. This prevents other players from making poor trades purely to be able to prevent you from expanding. Of course, if you CAN expand into contested territory, you should :)
