Not sure if the second diagram I added actually is what you meant. Looks a litte funny to me.

The shoulder hit seems to lead to pretty complicated fighting and several semeai possibilities on the edge. Just as you said, really difficult to judge. I guess if black were to just push and connect by clamp it would be too submissive.

comment What is the formula of rank difference to handicap stones?
@KarlKnechtel Certainly. Ranks do not really work for beginners. They become a reasonable approximation starting around 10 or 15 kyu I guess. To create meaningful statistics, you'd have to refer to dan level games so the noise in the samples is lower.

My mistake! Thanks for pointing it out, it's been a while since I read the rulebook and I remembered it wrongly. Very interesting.

Yeah, that's true, my mistake, I forgot about that. That is something actually new, and very useful.

comment What is the meaning of 'karai' and how is it applied?
I'm not sure if you knew but the Sensei's page was created from the discussion here and at the article linked in the question, it's not founded on a solid source. So we can't really use it as a reliable reference.

comment What is the meaning of 'karai' and how is it applied?
Yes, hot, spicy, salty was named many times in the discussions recently (also at senseis.xmp.net/?Karai). Gobase (a reliable source on at least the basics) has 'karai' but not 'katai' so I guess it was actually 'karai'.

comment What do you recommend to learn Go?
This is so far the best tutorial I've seen on Go. I learned Go this way and found it really easy and fun, and concise and fast as well.

comment Honinbo 1970, match 1: Why does white need to play toward the edge here?
Not sure, but an additional thought might be to have black initiate large avalanche in case white tenukis. So black would get a locally even position too, which is too nice since he already took a spot elsewhere. By the sagari of W2, this is impossible, and of course it makes for good mid- and endgame too.

comment Why are the boards not square?
Note that this is a CG image. I don't trust CG images for this sort of thing at all, and in fact think the image may be wrong here

comment Why did black avoid the straightforward capture here?
Nice explanation!

comment Why are the boards not square?
Interesting. Is that really the case? I figured it appears more or less completely square by just the slight width adjustment already.

I feel stupid, I can't seem to figure out how that site works. How do I actually attempt to solve something? Do I have to log in first?
