I'm a 27 year old EGF 1 dan, playing Go since late 2006. I was active in the community at Sensei's and the former SE-1.0 site shidogo.com, now switched my attention to BCG.SE

I've created a platform for bad Go jokes.

Easy to miss the 'slow' move at B1 in the second dia. Very nice

Just try to apply it in your study and games and it will become more natural quickly. :)

Can you explain a little more about the diamond shape? What is the purpose, and how is it useful in practice?

Actually, you brought up a very good point there. It doesn't look that great for white, you're right. However, compare this to black defending with a one point jump after white played wrong direction (or black playing that jump even without playing anything) - now that looks great for black! By comparing, we can see that in one diagram, black is very good, and in the other dia, it's even. Do you see how vast the difference is now? We always have to compare, because an even situation is a lot better than a bad situation.

On the top of my head, yes, thickness is always influence.

comment Why did black avoid the straightforward capture here?
Regarding the counter attack (I think you means after the last diagram in my post), certainly, black has to be careful, but the fight is at least even so it's better than, well, not being able to start a fight at all.

I don't think this is an issue. To make it a ko, white whould have to play bad shape, making her group more heavy. And even if black simply defends, the exchange does not really help white.

I used a modified example from Sensei's and a few examples and text passages given in Strategic Concepts of Go by Yoshiaki Nagahara 5d, chapter 4 and 5.
