I'm a 25 year old EGF 1 dan, playing Go since late 2006. I was active in the community at Sensei's and former shidogo.com, now switched my attention to BCG.SE
Known as recorder, I published the first large collection of Go videos in the West a few years ago. I've created a platform for bad Go jokes.

What is the meaning of 'karai' and how is it applied? I'm not sure if you knew but the Sensei's page was created from the discussion here and at the article linked in the question, it's not founded on a solid source. So we can't really use it as a reliable reference. |

What is the meaning of 'karai' and how is it applied? Yes, hot, spicy, salty was named many times in the discussions recently (also at senseis.xmp.net/?Karai). Gobase (a reliable source on at least the basics) has 'karai' but not 'katai' so I guess it was actually 'karai'. |

What do you recommend to learn Go? This is so far the best tutorial I've seen on Go. I learned Go this way and found it really easy and fun, and concise and fast as well. |

Honinbo 1970, match 1: Why does white need to play toward the edge here? Not sure, but an additional thought might be to have black initiate large avalanche in case white tenukis. So black would get a locally even position too, which is too nice since he already took a spot elsewhere. By the sagari of W2, this is impossible, and of course it makes for good mid- and endgame too. |

Why are the boards not square? Note that this is a CG image. I don't trust CG images for this sort of thing at all, and in fact think the image may be wrong here |

Why did black avoid the straightforward capture here? Nice explanation! |

Why are the boards not square? Interesting. Is that really the case? I figured it appears more or less completely square by just the slight width adjustment already. |

How do ranks work in Go? I'm just going to mark this as accepted answer. |

Is there a site to solve tsumego online? I feel stupid, I can't seem to figure out how that site works. How do I actually attempt to solve something? Do I have to log in first? |

Understanding influence and using it properly @Mef Afaik, the definition of thickness implies "center access". I remember a higher dan talking about it very precisely in a NannyOgg game review years ago, but I can't find it right now, so not completely sure. |

What is the formula of rank difference to handicap stones? @Joshua What exactly do you mean by reinforcing? I doubt this is an issue, since even 2 stones are already reinforcing, though less easily visible. It is true that high handicap stones work together a lot, but they have to, to make up for the more and more extreme difference in strength (just think about how inferior/superior your Go is to someone just a few stones stronger/weaker). |

At what level should one try to teach go? @CodeInChaos-LiKao If it's really that tough for you, you should probably have a look at a few books. As an amateur, it's very difficult to be sure of some things, even if you're a strong player. You need backup. -- Apart from that, if you present your ideas as, well, ideas, it should still be fine. The student will still gain some insight, at least he knows of your pov and your reasons and can take them in consideration in the future. |

How many points are won/lost during this exchange? Easy to miss the 'slow' move at B1 in the second dia. Very nice |
